Escape Room Props

Escape TTS: Newsbreak

In light of Covid and a time of zoom theatre, I was given the opportunity to request funds to support any theatrically related project through my theatre program. I've been interested in escape rooms for some time, so this was my chance to create this experience. Looking to a few friends, the entirely student-run team for this project came together very quickly.

Due to Covid, we knew that participants couldn't be in a room together, but we also wanted this experience to be shared between friends. This brought us to our two-room solution. Soon a theme was picked and the living room and study came to life.

Following Covid guidelines, my team was able to provide an escape room for two participants per run. Each run was 45 minutes long with just over a 50% success rate. I was thrilled to be the prop master and game master for this escape room and look forward to exploring that world more in the future.

One of two rooms for the escape room. This was a highly decorated space in order to provide many distractions to the player. The room featured two locked pictures and a locked desk cabinet that held a locked briefcase.

This is one of two rooms for the escape room. This room was centered around the map on the wall. Also featured were two locked picture frames and a small locked box.

This map was mounted on the wall in the living room. It was a canvas print wrapped around poster board. When the itineraries were found, the path of the trip could be used to connect different points and reveal three numbers. These numbers unlocked a picture on the wall revealing a window.

I utilized this small box to hold the final key to the escape room. I took a standard box and refinished it to match other items in the room. This included sanding the edges to make them smooth and staining the box in a similar color to the bookshelf and another table.

This orb is battery-operated and can be turned on from a distance with a remote. Once turned on, a directional code was revealed that unlocked the locked box. The remote was hidden in the opposing room and had to be pointed through a Plexi window to turn on the orb.

This final lock is mirrored on the other side of the wall, as well. Once unlocked, a magnet is used to pull out a drawer-like unit. Once both drawer units have been pulled out, a USB drive dropped, which was the game-winning item the players needed.

This briefcase was locked inside of the desk and was also locked. It held the final key for the study side of the escape room. The code was hidden in a wallet in the living room, see below. This briefcase was previously colored on with a sharpie, so I refinished it to fit the escape room.
